Conceptual Engineering Phase
The value of conceptual design work is that it highlights potential difficulties and areas where more data collection and design effort may be needed. The conceptual phase provides integrated ideas and concepts of how the proposed plant description should work and look that are understandable to users in the intended way. This includes concept development and concept selection. Concept development includes the development of ideas, options and alternatives - with the aim of ensuring that all options/possibilities have been identified and developed. Concept selection involves studying, screening and re-analyzing options until it can be justified and demonstrated which of the concepts should be selected.
Front End Engineering Design (FEED)
The front-end engineering design phase bridges the gap between the concept engineering and detail engineering phases. In this task, the overall system configuration is defined, and schematics, diagrams, and layouts of the project provide an early project configuration. During the detailed engineering design, the parameters of the materials may or may not change, but the FEED phase should be enough to start sourcing long-lead items. This includes facility definition and selection, equipment sizing, dynamic process simulation and flow assurance for oil and gas processing plants and pipeline systems. Initial facility selection and sizing is performed at the concept stage to determine weights and capital/operating costs for optional development concepts.
Detail Design
The detailed engineering phase is often considered the most important phase in the design process. With the completion of general dimensioning and structural validation, the development of the design has reached a point where the technical input for all procurement and construction tenders can be defined in sufficient detail.
